Who is really going to heaven? Most people think it will be based on whether our good deeds outweighed our bad deeds, and that we won't know until we get God's verdict when we die.
This is the wrong idea about what gets a person into heaven.
The Word of God in Revelation 21:23, 25 describes heaven. It talks about a city that "...does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the Glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp..." Then verse 27 says, "Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those," now listen to this, "whose names are written in the Lamb's Book of Life." The deciding document on the day you keep your appointment with God is the Lamb's Book of Life ( Revelation 21:27).
In the Word of God, Jesus talks about the only document that will matter the day our heart beats for the last time - the day eternity begins. In Luke 10:20 He says, "Rejoice that your names are written in heaven." What does that mean?
If Jesus said to rejoice because you are in it, obviously we can know in advance. That contradicts the usual conception that we won't know until we die if we're headed for heaven or hell. Either your name is in the Lamb's Book of Life, or it isn't. If it isn't, you can't enter heaven.
How can you know that your name is in His book; the one that records all those who are going to have life? God's Word says that He saved us, not because of the righteous things we have done, but because of His mercy. That mercy is described a few verses earlier in Titus 2:14, "Jesus Christ gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness."
The only thing that will keep you out of heaven is your sin - all the choices of your life that you've done your way instead of God's way. Your sin carries a death penalty which Jesus, the Lamb of God, paid as a substitute when He died on the cross. 1 John 5:12 says, "He who has the Son has life, he who does not have the Son of God, does not have life."
Is your name in the Lamb's Book of Life? It all depends on what you've done with Jesus. The only way to heaven is to put your total trust in the One who died so you can live. You can know before the day is over that you will be in heaven when you die. Are you ready to leave this life?
