The first time I heard someone talking about an invisible airplane, my reaction was, "I don't think so." But, in a sense, there is such a thing. Not exactly an airplane that people can't see-but it's an airplane radar can't see. It's called the "Stealth" bomber. Of course, if a bomber is headed for you, you want to know it. And radar has always been what alerted defenders to that bomber. But the "Stealth" is able to come in under the range of radar-and invade air space undetected-and do damage it might never have been able to do if it had been detected. Nobody realizes they're in danger until it's too late.

If you're a little kid and there's a big tree, it's there for you to climb, right? At least that's the way my wife Karen approached it when she was a little girl on the farm. They had this big maple tree - BIG maple tree! It took three people to get their arms all the way around the trunk. Well, little Karen started to climb that old maple one day, working her way through those big, thick old branches near the bottom. She got almost to the top when she suddenly realized something - the branches at the top are a lot skinnier than the branches at the bottom. Suddenly she was out on a very slim limb, on the verge of falling. That's when she started yelling for help - which, thankfully, her father provided. Karen found out in that old maple tree that the risks of falling are a lot greater at the top than they are at the bottom.

I have some friends who live near this industrial area - it's a steel mill type of industrial. You could take me there blindfolded and I'd know where I am, because the mills produce a distinctive aroma - OK, smell? Stink? Yeah. All day long you can smell this sulfur-like, rotten eggs type of odor. When you go there for the first time, you sniff and you go, "What's that?" Funniest thing - the people who live there answer, "What's what?" They've lived around that stench so long it doesn't even register anymore. It's gross, but they've gotten used to gross.

I hear a lot of wives complain about communication being a problem in their marriage. It sure was for my wife and me on a trip we took one summer. We had a lot of miles to cover in our van in one day - one very hot day. The day the air conditioner decided not to work, which meant we had to travel with all the windows down or have a sauna on wheels for the next 12 hours. I had a lot of work to do on this trip, and my wife enjoyed driving, so she was in front where it's really good for the driver to be, and I was in the back of the van with my computer. Now, about communication? No way. No matter how important the information was, we couldn't possibly yell loud enough to overcome the wind. All you could see was lips moving; it was like a silent movie. So, we had to save up anything we wanted to say for toll booths, traffic jams, and any place where we had to slow down. Those were the only times we could hear anything!

Now, for fellow New York Yankees fans, this might be hard for you to hear. It's going to go back in some baseball history, but it was something really good about a player from that other team. Yeah, the Boston Red Sox. Yeah, they were the 2004 World Champion Boston Red Sox when this happened. Their dramatic eight game string of victories carried them from three games down to the Yankees all the way to a four game sweep of the World Series.

When I had the opportunity to visit the White House some years ago for a meeting with the President, (with a lot of other people...not all alone) I learned what everyone learns who is going to America's Executive Mansion. They really check you out before they let you in there. There's a background check. There are Marines at the door checking you out. You go through a metal detector to make sure you're not carrying anything naughty with you. Believe me, you don't just decide to drop by the White House, walk right in and say, "Hi, everybody! Make yourself at home, huh?" No.

"Just handle them by the edges, Dad!" That was my son's repeated instruction whenever I picked up some of his valuable baseball cards to look at. Valuable as in helping to eventually help pay his way through college! He didn't want to risk me reducing the mint condition value of a card with my grubby fingerprints. Of course, our son-in-law, who was also a photographer, felt that same way about the photos that he brought back from some of our ministry events. Of course, I wanted to see them, but again I was warned, "Just be careful. Don't get your fingerprints on them." OK, I get it! I guess if you're in law enforcement, fingerprints are your friend. But there are some things you just mess up if you get your prints on them.

Twice in a little over a decade, Saddam Hussein's Iraq was the focus of a war involving American and other coalition forces, as you know. Operation Iraqi Freedom, the second Gulf War, turned out to be much quicker than anyone could have imagined. You might remember, Saddam Hussein was toppled from power and ultimately captured. But that didn't stop critics from calling into question the intelligence that led to the decision to send troops to Iraq. The absence of the expected stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction brought a widespread outcry for an investigation into how American intelligence missed what appeared to be the real situation. The battle kind of goes on and even today it's brought up. Well, you know this is nothing new. It's always been important for a country to have reliable intelligence information before they venture into battle. A lot of important decisions are made based upon the reports from intelligence.

The power was out this morning when some of our neighbors woke up. In fact, several hundred customers were without electricity. Oh, it wasn't the power company's fault. It was the fault of a driver who ran his car into an electric pole. Oh, not on purpose, of course. See it was a grandfather returning from an all-night hunting expedition with his grandson. Unfortunately, his body didn't want to wait until it got home to sleep. So the driver fell asleep at the wheel. Now, he was injured, his car was damaged, and lots of folks had no power.

Our son was a lineman when he played high school football. Which meant our son did a lot of weight lifting, which meant he got stronger. But it also meant a lot of eating, which meant he got bigger. I noticed that all the guys playing line had big muscles and big stomachs. When I commented on that, he said, "Dad, we're proud of that. It's lineman's gut!" Funny, I thought it was lineman's fat. Well, after the season, our son lost thirty pounds and his big stomach was all gone. He told me he was really proud that he had lost all that fat. (That was his word.) Of course, I had to say, "Do you remember when you told me it was lineman's gut?" He said, "Uh, Dad – I think we call that a rationalization."
