Welcome everyone to another episode of Go Mad with Doug and Brad, and we are here to try to help you have also a Go Mad summer, making a difference all summer long. And today I am super excited because we have got an amazing brother as a guest with us. You'll hear about him in just a minute, a joy-filled brother who is going to help us dive into a little bit of How you can use your gifts, whatever they are, the gifts God has given you to be an ambassador for Him.

Doug:
I have been so looking forward to this. chance to talk with Hunt Lee. He's just one of our musical heroes.

He's not only an incredible piano player and author, but he is an ambassador for Christ in a big way. He plays many events with the Billy Graham Association. I just watched this amazing video on YouTube.

where Huntley was uh playing at the Franklin Graham Crusade in Ukraine a few years back, choir singing How Great Thou Art. Go check it out on YouTube to see some of Huntley's heart. Uh it played everywhere from Carnegie Hall to high schools played with gang activity and everything in between.

More than Being an amazing author and musician, like I mentioned, is Huntley an ambassador for Christ. He's serious about bringing Jesus to as many as he can with the gifts God has given him. And that's the thing.

You know, on our podcast here, we talk about that we are Christ's ambassador, as if he is making his appeal to the world, to people that need him through us. And that's the thing, whatever gifts. Whatever platforms or influence God has given you.

You don't have to be a great musician, a great author, have upfront gifts, any of that. God has given us all gifts and platforms And influence as his followers. And he's given them to you to draw others to himself So as you listen to Huntley today, you're gonna hear ideas about how you can do the same regardless of what your gifts are.

So Welcome, Huntley. Thanks for being with us today.

Thank you so much. Yaman, it's good to be here.

Doug:

Huntley:
I love it.

Doug:
Huntley, man. So great to have you here. Um, I re I read in an interview recently this quote from you.

You said, I discovered I'm an ambassador, a musical ambassador through Christ. Well, that's one reason we're so excited to talk to you today. But for before we get into some of that, I heard this amazing story you have about how you decided.

to go into full time music ministry. Something about playing in Jamaica, bars, hotels, all that good stuff Can you tell us that story? We would love to hear that.

Huntley:
You know, first I must say man, it's an honor to be here with you guys. Really grateful for what God is using you guys to do globally. And I look forward to what God has in store for the future.

But, you know, mentioning that story in Jamaica, you know, I became a Christian when I was very young. And I knew God had a calling on my life But when I got older, I grew up in a poor family. I wanted to make some money.

So when I got older, I decided, you know, let me go to make some money. And I started playing in the bands, in the hotels, nightclubs, you know, making some money. But I was conflicted.

Yeah, I was trying to justify being a Christian, playing in the clubs. And a lot of my music musician friends will say to me, Huntly, what changed? And I'll tell you exactly what happened, okay?

Bob Marley, who's his famous reggae artist, his wife Rita Marley has a song she wrote many years ago called I Wanna Get High and the song goes i wanna get high so high okay now i have never done drugs in my life okay But I am on stage playing, jumping, and singing the song. Okay. And all of a sudden I got convicted.

How can I be a Christian? And I'm playing the song. So I said, okay, Lord, you call me to be an ambassador for you.

And I want to be an ambassador tonight. So when my break time comes, the first person you lead me to, I'm going to talk to about Jesus. So my break time came and I came went to the bar area and the Lord said to me, you know, speak to the bartender.

So I tried to talk to the bartender about Jesus and he's taught me in my tracks. And he said, you say nothing to me about Christianity because you could never be a Christian. And in essence, what he was saying was his idea of what a Christian should be.

Me saying I'm an I'm an ambassador for Christ. He did not see in me. Now I'm telling you, I didn't say another word.

It was 1984. I went on the beach in Otreus, Jamaica on this little boat. I was wearing this white pants and a burgundy shirt.

I remember it clearly. And I sat on the beach. I said, okay, God, you gave this gift to me to play the piano.

Tonight I am giving it back to you. I said, Lord, wherever you take me, I am ready. But all I know is tonight I'm not worried about the money anymore.

I'm not worried about the fame. I am giving this gift back to you tonight. Now here the only problem with that whole situation.

Stevie Wanda had come to Jamaica before. And Stevie Wand, the manager had two bands. And Stevie came to hear our band as well.

Okay, so my band was second in line to come to California. And all of a sudden, with all of that on the table, because they even asked me to make a tape for Stevie, which I did. With all of that on the table, and with us being in the recording studio.

I decided to quit and play full-time for Jesus.

Brad:
And I gave it all up and I've never looked back since.

Brad:
Wow.

Brad:
Wow. Huntley, that is, I mean, it's it really is amazing. Because the fact you can pinpoint that moment like that, not just not just the moment in the bar talking with the bartender and everything, but that what you were wearing and everything, it obviously it's clear that was a huge moment for you.

And you just said something I think answers this question, but I it just hit me as you were talking. You you laid that before the Lord. Someone might be listening to this saying, okay, so okay, there's laying my gift before the Lord, but some people try to take it back off the altar.

Some people are like, hey, I'm gonna the I think my dad has said the problem with it or some quote. The problem with uh living sacrifice is they keep trying to get up and leave the altar. So we we have that problem, but but have you um uh experienced that in your life or have you really felt like I guess the question would be what steps have you taken to not Take that back.

Huntley:
Brad, you're asking fantastic questions, man. I'm telling you, you're getting me pumped up now. Here's what's amazing.

It's all about relationship And let me explain what I mean by that. You know, Proverbs chapter 3, verse 5 says, Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not. Lean not on your own understanding.

Verse 6 says, in all your ways acknowledge him, and he's gonna direct your path. Now how does that play out? You gotta pay your bills.

God gave you this gift to play the piano. But all of a sudden, you're offering this gift on the altar and you're saying, but God, you're being slow. Or God, you're not doing this.

God, I feel I need to take it back now. Let me help God out, okay? You know, God, you're gonna be gonna God, you need a little bit of help right now, okay But here's how the Lord helped me over the years.

I'm going to give you a specific example, okay? When I came from Jamaica, I came in 84. I'm going to jump ahead in the story.

And I'm at Judson College now, Judson University. I'm on a half scholarship and I'm supposed to work on campus, etc. and pay the rest. But my bills are stacking up And I'm here saying to God, okay, Lord, I I I gotta help you out now because I mean even though you know you promised to take care of me, my bills are not being paid.

So I'm gonna go and take a job out there. Okay, so I went, got a job on a Friday night at this club. In Elgin, all of a sudden I got convicted.

And I said, God, I gave all of this up for you. And here I am now back in this club playing, taking back my sacrifice to you, Lord. And so now I made a deal with God.

You got give be careful you make deals with God, okay? I said, okay, Lord, here's what I'm gonna do. I said, God, okay.

This was in I think 84, 85. I said Lord, they are paying me $50 per night to play at this place. I said, God, if between next week, by the end of next week, if you give me the $50 back, I promise you I'll quit.

I said, God, that's exactly what I'll do. Okay. So Tuesday came and I got 25 bucks.

And me with my brush self said, but Lord, $25 is good. But the dealers for $50 You say you don't direct my path and you give me 25. That's not enough, okay?

So all of a sudden I got a call from the Salvation Army in Elgin And the captain said, okay, um Huntley, we have this dinner for the Salvation Army coming up. Could you come and provide some dinner music for us? I said, sure, you know, I'm happy to.

I wasn't charging them anything. I just wanted to do, you know, from my heart So I went and played for this dinner. On the way back to campus, the captain gave me an envelope.

I said, oh, we just want to thank you. So I got the envelope and as soon as I got the envelope, I heard the Lord say to me in my spirit, Huntley, look inside. Brad and Doug, I panicked I mean I literally panicked.

I was afraid to even look. So all of a sudden I got back to campus, took the envelope out and checked it. It was $25.

Oh, come on. And I said the Lord said to me, okay, Huntley, next question. And what the Lord was saying to me, Huntley, you gotta trust me You have to trust me when you give me your gift.

You might not understand right away. But if you trust me, I will direct your path. And over the years, I can give story after story after story of seeing how God works in that way

Brad:
Wow.

Huntley:
I that is just it it really is.

Brad:
I mean, for anyone listening, I hope they were just encouraged that, hey, you know what? It doesn't mean and Doug and I experienced this in ministry. We've been in full-time ministry for a lot of years now, combined especially. And I, you know, the way God provides when you trust

Huntley:
him but man it's tempting to grab that back uh to grab that back sometimes so that is fantastic oh Brad can I share one more quick story I I gotta share one like what this is a this is too good okay I'm about to grab it from Judson, okay? And um I have a mountain of debt. Remember when God says he's gonna take care of us, God doesn't say he's gonna get everything right away.

Sometimes God does it in his own way. I had a mountain of debt and I'm about to graduate. But you cannot graduate, get a diploma until you have, you know, you know, cleared a debt.

All of a sudden, making a long story short, this couple from my church called me and they said, Huntley, here's a check we'd like to give to you to help with your college bill. Dog and Brad I got excited, praise God. But I looked at the check and had a problem.

The check was blank It was signed and it was blank. I went back to my friends and I said, you know, um I'm so grateful for your help, but we got a problem. They said what is the problem?

I said, well, you sign the check, but the check is blank. And my friend said, we know. So take your check to the school and have your school fill in what you owe.

And I graduated debt free. God said next question. Wow.

Doug:
Next question. Yeah. Man.

I love hearing this. There's so many affirmations from God that you were not only taking the right road, but you were continuing to stay on the right road. And that's what I want to ask you about here.

Um I think I read somewhere you said I'd love to be the Billy Graham of piano or something like that. My question is, you know, for someone who's listening here today Whatever their gifts are, you know, maybe they have a gift of music, maybe of teaching, maybe it's hospitality. How do how do you become the Billy Graham of teachers?

How do you become the Billy Graham of coaches or of car salesmen. In other words, how do you use whatever the gifts and influence God has given you to draw people to Jesus, no matter what it is. What can you do?

What can our listeners do to use those gifts and that influence to be his ambassador?

Huntley:
Doug, what a fantastic question. You know, Paul says follow me as I follow Christ When I looked at Billy Graham's life over the years, he became my earthly hero. When I saw his faith journey, I saw his um the way he took care of his family.

The way he made sure money was not an issue in the ministry. Everything about his life was pointing people to Jesus. And Billy Graham would say I'm not the greatest preacher in the world, but God can use me.

And all he's asking God to do is God here here are my gifts. Use me. And when I saw that in Billy Graham, I was like, wow.

I would see Billy Graham go to North Korea. With communist dictators and they'd call him his friend. He'd go to England, they'd call him his friend.

He'd go to the poorest country and they'd call him his friends. And he treated everybody the same. And I'm saying, God.

I want to pattern my life after this. Yes, we want to be like Jesus, but we want to see good earthly examples. As the scripture says, you are the light of the world.

That's what Jesus said, you're the light of the world. So we're gonna let your light shine. So when I saw Billy Graham's light, I said, Lord, I want to be like this.

I want to follow his example. I, you know, when he talked about Billy Graham not putting himself into compromising situations with women, I wanted to be like that. I said, God, his integrity.

I want to follow that. So so you know um Doug we talk about um integrity. I see a picture of Billy Graham hanging up there, okay?

I said no, I want to be like that. I want to make sure that people look past my gift and people see Christ in me as an ambassador. So people will say, okay, man, I love the Jesus I'm seeing in Huntley Brown or in Brad or in Dog.

And so I just had this wonderful example in Billy Graham. And that's why I really told everybody, you know. It wasn't a cocky statement as some people say, but a statement that say Here's what I'd love to be.

If my ministry and my life could be reflective of Billy Graham's, I'd be a happy man.

Brad:
Huntley, what you say there is really it ties into The first time I remember seeing you in person, seeing you perform, and that was at Wheaton College. When I was at Wheaton College. And uh I won't say what year, because it'll give away some of my age and yours.

But uh well so but it was at uh it was at Wheaton College and What I remember is it goes in line with what you're saying, because what I hear you saying is it's not just about what kind of gift you have. It's not about Are you the best at what you do even? It is about are you letting Christ work through you?

Are you giving that gift to him and showing Jesus? And that's what I really remember. Yeah, I remember you pounding those keys.

And I remember just sitting there like, wow, I don't know if I had seen someone play kind of like that before. play piano like that. And so I remember that.

But what I really truly remember all these years later is walking away from there. And I got to talk to you a little afterwards, but thinking That man has the joy of Jesus in him. That man is showing Jesus because you people can perform.

A lot of people can perform. But it is really much more rare that someone can disappear in the performance and and it becomes about worship. And everything they do becomes about worship.

And that's what I saw in you was this joy, was this this individual who wasn't about the skill he had. He was about bringing Jesus glory through what he did. Can you talk to us for a minute?

And I do want to, I'm going to get to just to give people a heads up. One of the other things I remember from that day, and that's a uh a very fun moment that I'm gonna ask Huntley to relive for a moment. But but but Huntley, talk to us about um that that worship mentality, how do you what is what are some of the things that you yourself have done and that our listeners can do to enter into that spirit of worship, whatever their gift is that they're bringing to Jesus, whatever they're doing.

What are some practical ways they can live their life as worship.

Huntley:
Bradman, you guys are asking some fantastic questions this morning. And you use the right word. You talk about worship.

That is my subject now. We could be here a long time. Now here's what's amazing about worship.

God gave me a revelation a couple of years ago that totally changed my life. I was in another state and my pastor friend said to me, Hunter, we have a problem. We changed the worship format and people at the church are not happy.

So some people they um would stay outside now they never left the church but they stayed outside for the worship time to end and then they'd come inside I saw this and the Lord said to me, Huntly, the people on the outside, they do not understand worship. I said, Lord. Uh uh you gotta give me a little more, you know, explanation.

I won't say God speaks to me guys. I'm a talking audible, I'm a hearing boom. This is God speaking to you huntly you know you know brother we we we know we that God speaks Jamaican okay but I'm a hearing like that okay I am hearing internally okay And the Lord said to me, the people on the outside don't understand worship.

So I'm saying, Lord, give me more information. The Lord gave me an example with food. No guys, I hate mushrooms.

My wife will tell me it's my least amen. It's the worst food in the world Exactly right. And anybody listening who loves mushrooms, we will pray for you and after deliver you.

Okay. Oh guys. Oh my goodness.

He's just crazy If you guys are coming to see me, you're gonna order pizza. If you put mushrooms on the pizza, I'm not gonna be happy. Okay, because I hate mushrooms.

No

Doug:
I won't even pick 'em off and eat it. If the mushroom has been on it, if it's been in the vicinity. Just get it away from me. My kind of guy, man. You're preaching good dog.

Huntley:
That's exactly right. Get rid of those mushrooms, man. So if we if we brought your pizza's mushrooms, we're not gonna be happy.

And suppose now that's the first week. Suppose the next week. We bring another pizza with mushrooms.

Okay, mushrooms. We're not gonna be happy again. Now suppose week after week, month after month, we keep bringing a pizza with mushrooms.

We're gonna be angry after a while. And the Lord said to me, Huntley, it's the same with worship. Huntley Brown, worship is not about what you like.

Worship is about what I like. So God was saying to us, if you truly are gonna worship me in spirit and in truth, first figure out what I like. If you bring anything else to me, you're simply bringing me mushrooms.

And then guys, once I figured that God was saying to us, if you're truly gonna be the God kind of worshipper First, you have to figure out the kind of worship that God likes. That's why scripture says, These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain.

So once I discovered that God likes when we worship him. And he likes for all for us to worship him a certain way. I started going to God's presence to say, okay, God, talk to me.

Show me what the kind of worship you are looking for. Because I want you to be happy. God, I do not want to bring you mushrooms.

Brad:
You know I want to bring you something you you appreciate. Oh my goodness, that just What what do you know? Worship about him and what he's looking for, not what we want and we're looking for. Wow.

Doug:
And I love that we have made this a spiritual issue about mushrooms because it's an even better argument I have for it. By the way If someone keeps bringing us pizzas with mushrooms, we're not only gonna be angry, we're gonna be really hungry. What else you got?

So uh Aunt Lee, let me ask you this. Um, so I'm a musician, but not so much on the keys. I actually Much to my parents' disappointment, took five years of piano lessons, and I'm not sure I can find Middle C at this point.

Um I ended up being a guitar guy Uh long story short, decided to use the gifts God has given me to serve young people in Native America and serve with uh Native Americans where there's so much uh despair about future, things like that. I found how powerful of a magnet music can be through that kind of ministry. And of course ultimately the magnet is Jesus.

Um, he's why my thoughts went from being a uh Christian music star guy in Nashville to uh playing with uh bands on Native American reservations And it got me thinking, as I knew we were going to talk to you, to ask you this: how important is it to develop the gifts that God has given you to get as excellent as you can with whatever your gifts are. Now how does that tie in to being Christ's ambassador? Because you just mentioned about kind of And that's in the in in God's word is bringing God's leftovers, bringing him a a a blemished lamp instead of our best.

Uh how do you how do you bring him your best and how then does that tie into being his ambassador?

Huntley:
Doug, once again another fantastic question, man. You know, here's what I've discovered The gift of music for me was God's gift to me. What I did with the gift was my gift back to God.

So I realized if I'm going to go to see a major world leader anywhere, you know, if I'm going to play a Carnegie Hall, if I'm going to play like you mentioned Ukraine or Russia or China. I'm going to be in the practice room practicing, trying to be the best that I can be. And I'm thinking to myself, no, that's on the world stage.

How about when you're working for God? What would it like? And here's what has helped me help me over the years.

I've asked my friends a question: What would it look like if you were doing something for God? What would it look like? You know, when I go to Jamaica and I go visit the um Governor General Mansion, you know, we dress a certain way, put on our suits Everybody who's got my entourage and whoever is coming with me, we dress a certain way, we talk a certain way, we plan before we get there, we prepare.

And I'm like, but if I am God's ambassador, representing God, that people are gonna look at my gift and say, boy, I want to see God in you. What do I need to do? And so I realized my responsibility is to pray number one because my my praying ability has to be more significant than my musical ability.

So I'm going to pray. I'm going to practice. Because what you do not want to do is to get into a church service, not practice, and then give God your second best.

People walking up people say man that was not good at all. So I'm trying to give God my very best. So when I practice, I'm like God, I'm doing this because I'm representing you.

I want people to say just like Braddy mentioned earlier. When you saw me play, you said man, this guy is not all about the music It's much more. It's deeper than just the music.

And that's what I'm trying to convey. And that can only be accomplished by us practicing By us praying, by us taking the time. Last royal shareboard, this is almost like with Michael Jordan, the greatest basketball player of all time.

They used to say Michael Jordan was the first one at the gym and the last one to leave. First one to gym, last one to leave. Why?

Just for basketball. How about us representing God? I want to make my daddy proud.

I want to make God proud that he said this is my beloved son in whom I'm love.

Brad:
I'm well pleased Oh man, that's so good. Hunley, when I hear this, the the approach that you are giving people of how to use a gift to realize that it is something that's been given from the Lord and then to uh the the part that prayer plays in that uh is something that so many people miss. So thank you for for sharing that because yes the practice is key.

But to be able to pray our way through these things. Um, and I I don't know if an episode is flying by faster than this one has, quite honestly. We are the the things you were sharing, I already know we've got to have you back again.

Um, but we want to get to a couple quick things here, including in a minute asking if you would pray for our listeners. I'm gonna just give you a heads up on that um as they seek to use their gifts. But I want people to know one of the things that as you are doing all of this as worship, we can have enjoy life.

when we're doing this. And that's like I said, it's one of the things I saw in you. You can enjoy life.

You can still have fun. Just because you're using your gift for the Lord doesn't mean you have to you need to have a smile on your face when doing it because it's the gift he's given you You use that for fun too. And I'm gonna put you on the spot here and see there is an incredible Louis Armstrong impression that you have done over and over, and I've seen it in person, I've seen it on YouTube.

I've played it for my kids, and they're like, Dad, who's Louis Armstrong? No, no pressure. No pressure at all.

But I'm just wondering and and I I'm just wondering would you be willing to give us a little sample of that while we're together here?

Huntley:
I I would love to ego. When the saints go marching in years, oh when the saints go mine, see Baba Zubazu say, Yeah, Lord, I want To be in that number when the saints go marching. Bob bub zip zub bop zub z Oh yes

Brad:
Oh, that is awesome. That is so good. I that didn't just bring a smile to your face as a listener. Well, you need to go check things out real quick because that is that brightens anyone's day.

Doug:
We've got our uh producer here right across the glass and he was falling out of his chair laughing. It's so good.

Huntley:
Brennan Doug, I gotta share a funny story about that song, okay? Yeah. Years ago I was in Ireland in Belfast.

And we did an unbelievable concert in which we called a concert of peace in the country was fighting in our northern adversary republic. And the the last concert we did, we had the Queen's Band from England. On the same stage with the top Irish band from Ireland.

It had not happened since 1927. And the media was sent to us, what are you guys doing? In the middle of the concert.

I called the director from both sides, the Queen's band and also the top Irish band. And we did when the stage goes marching in. And I had them do Louis Armstrong.

I kid you not.

Brad:
Oh my goodness, that is fantastic. I love it.

Huntley:
Tully amazing evening.

Doug:
So in a second here, yeah, we're gonna ask Huntley to pray. for our listeners here, for all of us um involved in this conversation. I I do have to say, this is one of the times I wish That uh if you're checking out this podcast, you could see the video of it.

And we're talking about that in the future. Um, but this whole time We have been seeing Huntley and through every question, smile, joy. This is a man that has discovered the joy of bringing his gifts his influence to the altar, to the cross, and saying, Jesus, this is yours.

And and that's really With all the practical steps we've heard today, uh putting with whatever your gift is, whatever your influence, putting others first when you do it, doing it with integrity. Offering that gift to Jesus every day. Lord, whatever you ask, I am available.

Offering that gift in excellence, making sure you're bringing your best to the altar. But at the end of the day, this joy that you have is something that I'm guessing that a listener today is going I want that kind of joy when I'm bringing what God has given me to Him and to serve others. And they're wondering, how can I do that?

And where do I start? So, Huntley, would you pray for that person? Would you pray for all of us as we seek to be his ambassadors with the gifts he's given us?

Huntley:
Let's pray. Father, we thank you, we bless you, we praise you. What an amazing heavenly father you are.

God, what a privilege it is to come into your presence, God, to just take some time out, to just love upon you, to just worship you, to just praise you. To let the world know the wonderful, amazing heavenly Father that you truly are. And Father, I pray, God, for all those who are listening right now.

I pray for those, Father God, who might be depressed. Those who are wondering, what do I do with my gift? Father, I thank you, God, that your word tells us in all our ways we shall acknowledge you, and you're going to direct our path.

God, I pray that the people, Father God, who are listening will start to acknowledge you, God, in such a way that they'll hear your voice and hear it clearly. Father, we know you have plans for all of us. You created us, God, with a purpose.

And I pray God that each person listening will come into your presence blank. That means Father God, come into your presence to listen, to say, God, what do you want me to do? How do you want to use me?

And Father, I thank you, God, you're going to orchestrate events in such a way that they're going to see your hand displayed. God, I know Lord, it's not Huntley Brown is anybody special, God, our brother, or dog. But Father, we have given ourselves to you to ask you to use us.

So I pray right now, Father God, as we try to lead the way, as we try to set an example, as we try to be a light, that others, Father God, would be attracted to the light that they see in us. And that light is you. And that Father God, they'll use their gifts and talents to make a difference for your kingdom.

Father, we are your ambassadors. And I pray, God, that you'll be pleased with everything that we're trying to do. But I pray now, Father God, you bring your peace, your comfort to your people, and you'll cause them to know, Lord, that you will never leave them or forsake them.

them. And we give you thanks and praise for being with us in the mighty powerful name that is above every other name, the name of Jesus. Amen.

Brad:
