There used to be an amusement park with a ride called the Rotor. It was like a giant washing machine tub, except they didn't put clothes in it. People would step into this big, round cylinder and stand on a ledge. It would start to spin, getting faster and faster, and then the floor would drop out from underneath them. You could hear the screams halfway across the city as riders were thrown against the outer edges. Centrifugal force is amazing! The faster things are spinning, the more things are spun to the edge.
Luke 10:38-42 from God's Word says, "As Jesus and His disciples were on their way, He came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to Him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what He said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to Him and asked, 'Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!' 'Martha, Martha,' the Lord answered, 'you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.'"
Martha is spinning in this story, and she is spinning so fast that she spins Jesus right to the edge. Could it be that your life has become so busy that you are neglecting Jesus? You don't mean to, and you never meant to. The irony of Martha's story, and maybe yours too, is that she was busy serving Jesus. You're not out doing bad things. You're out doing His work, but Martha has Jesus right in her home, and she misses Him. In fact, the phrase "distracted by all the preparations" literally means "pulled away." She was saying, "Jesus, I'd like to be with You, but hold it. Have you seen my To Do List? Have you heard all I have to do? I have to take care of the roast. Oh, there goes the phone again."
The old song says, "The longer I serve Him, the sweeter He grows." For that to be true, we have to be sitting at Jesus' feet. Maybe you have noticed lately that the work you used to do out of devotion is now duty. It used to come from your passion for Jesus, and now it's just a profession. You're cranking it out for Jesus, but there's no real joy. There's no real fulfillment. You're suffering from the results of spiritual centrifugal force, and everything is going to remain frustrating and stressful until you put first what Jesus called "what is better." The better portion, the better part, He says "is to sit down and be with Me."
Why don't you make your time with Jesus non-negotiable in your schedule? Make it non-cancelable, where no one else can have that time. Start to write a journal about your times with Jesus, and don't just read the Bible to be with a book. Be with Jesus. Put that Book in your lap, and say, "Jesus, this is Your letter to me. Speak to me as if You're sitting in the chair right across from me." Then in prayer, walk through all the details of your day with Him before you ever live them. Stay in close, frequent touch all day long. Loving Jesus is more important than serving Jesus.
If you're spinning so fast that Jesus is on the edge, you're living in the barrenness of a busy life. Get off your feet for a while and sit at His feet.
