Babies do not always know what is good for them, especially when it comes to food. That's why, rather than pry open a stubborn baby's mouth, we play airplane.
We put the food on a spoon, pilot it slowly around, make the baby smile, and then hopefully quickly land in the open mouth. Sometimes that hangar door suddenly closes, leaving the airplane's cargo all over the baby's face. What a crazy baby! Food is what the baby needs, but he won't open his mouth.
In Psalm 81:10-16 of the Bible, God says "I am the Lord your God, who brought you up out of Egypt. Open wide your mouth and I will fill it. But my people would not listen to me; Israel would not submit to me. So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts to follow their own devices. If my people would but listen to me, if Israel would follow my ways, how quickly would I subdue their enemies and turn my hand against their foes!...You would be fed with the finest of wheat; with honey from the rock I would satisfy you."
Years ago God was saying to His people - and today He is saying to us - that His people are under-living. There is so much more He wants to give you and do for you. There is a voice inside many of us that is saying, "There has got to be something more in this relationship with Christ and in this Christian living."
This is not news to make us materially prosperous, but to know that God has more power, more peace, more love, and more significance to open up our lives so we can really make a difference. The problem is that He can't get our mouths open, just like trying to feed a baby. God wants us to want His best for our lives, but we have to open our mouths.
He wants us to expect the supernatural. In Jesus' hometown of Nazareth, "he did not do many miracles...because of their lack of faith" ( Matthew 13:58). He did miracles everywhere but there, and the people who knew the most about Him saw the least supernaturally because they weren't expecting anything. They didn't open their mouths. Faith is acting as if God will keep His promise and do something God-sized. God says, "I tried to, and they would not listen. They would not follow my ways."
Is there a part of your life where you have been doing your own thing and going your own way? Maybe it's been at home, at work, at church, in your love life, or with your finances. Perhaps in your relationships you're missing God's best because you're going your own way. He says, "I've let them follow their own devices." In that part of your life, you're on your own, settling for crumbs when He wants to serve you a banquet.
Instead, why don't you start living as if you want God's best - trusting Him for His best? He is holding in His hands the supernatural food you need right now. Just open your mouth, and let Him fill it.
