Some people make a living selling novelty items because many people like to buy them. Did you ever see those little black plastic things that have three buttons on them, and each button makes a different sound?
One of the sounds is a machine gun. If you get impatient with the guys in front of you, you can just press the button and it will make a machine gun sound. It also has a death ray sound, so you can try to dematerialize the car that's driving so slowly in front of you.
Remember other novelties like pet rocks? They were big for awhile. There were also the antennas people would put on their heads, and they would wave back and forth.
There is a clever new novelty item selling at toy shows right now. A company has made two hand-mirrors that make sounds. One mirror shrieks when you look into it, while the other one laughs hysterically. That's just what you need - a mirror with a reaction, right? Maybe the idea isn't all that bad.
James 1:22 of the Bible says "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it - he will be blessed in what he does."
Here's a pretty radical idea. Every time you read the Bible, something should change. The Bible says that if all you do is read the Bible, you deceive yourself. You are supposed to change because of what the Bible says. Isn't that what happens when you look in the mirror in the morning? You get up and say, "I can't believe how much damage six hours can do." Usually, you comb, cover, mousse, or do something before you start the day. The idea behind looking in a mirror is to see what needs changing. That is also the idea behind looking in the Bible.
Like those novelty mirrors, the mirror of God's Word can sometimes make you shriek at what you find, and sometimes it will lighten your spirit and make you laugh. When you look into God's Word and let it be a mirror, sometimes you'll say, "That's a scary part of my life. What sinful part of me should Jesus and I be working on today?" After looking in the Bible and seeing a God's-eye view of something big and scary, sometimes you'll laugh and say, "That's not so scary. It's big to me, but it's small to my Lord." You can walk away from the Bible feeling lighter because of your new perspective.
You should be different after looking in a mirror, and especially after looking in the Bible mirror. Look in the mirror and say, "How do I look to you today, God?" Walk away cleaner because you dealt with your sin, or lighter because you saw your problem as God sees it. Make sure you do what needs to be done to change after you look in the mirror of God's Word.
