This growing unrest in Egypt could be a really big deal. They're the largest country in the Middle East...the guardians of the vital Suez Canal...a key to peace with Israel...and a moderate voice America has counted on for stability in that volatile region.
And suddenly (the way major things seem to be happening all the time these days) the future of Egypt seems up for grabs. It's not just about some demonstrations in what seems like a faraway country. This one could ultimately touch a lot of our lives.
But I'm OK. No matter what bombshell flashes on "breaking news" today or any day. Here's the big picture behind whatever disturbing news explodes today:
"The nations are in chaos, and their kingdoms crumble! God's voice thunders, and the earth melts! The Lord of Heaven's Armies is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress" (Psalm 46:6-7 - NLB).
We might as well fasten our seat belts for a crazy ride ahead. A couple of years ago, America's financial world was rocked to its core by the domino collapses of one Wall Street weekend. We've had two radical swings of the political pendulum in just two years. Some nations seem beyond any restraints by the rest of the world. And now, the future of a strategic country is a disturbing question mark.
For thousands of years, the prophecies of the Bible have predicted a world like ours - a world of uncertainty and upheaval. Just before the King of all kings returns to take charge. "There will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now - and never to be equaled again" (Matthew 24:21). "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom...Nations will be in anguish and perplexity...Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world..." (Luke 21:10, 25-26).
That's the bad news. But the good news is incredible news! "At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory" (Luke 21:27). Yes!
Any time's a good time to belong to Jesus. But this time is a really good time to belong to Him. Because behind all the exploding events of our time, there is a Plan. And a divinely orchestrated, humanly untouchable countdown to the coming of the King.
"The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run into it and they are safe" (Proverbs 18:10). I'm there.
